Planetary Nebulae as Probes of Stellar Populations
Planetary nebulae (PNe) have the potential to revolutionize our understanding of extragalactic stellar populations. Indeed, in many systems, bright PNe are the only individual objects identifiable from the ground, and, even more often, they are the only stars that are amenable to spectroscopy. We review the ways in which ensembles of PNe can be used to probe the metallicity, age, and history of...
متن کاملPlanetary Nebulae Surveys Beyond the Local Group
Distant planetary nebulae (PNe) are used to measure distances through the PN luminosity function, as kinematic tracers in determining the mass distribution in elliptical galaxies, and most recently, for measuring the kinematics of the diffuse stellar population in galaxy clusters. This article reviews the photometric and spectroscopic survey techniques that have been used to detect PNe beyond t...
متن کاملThe Galactic Bulge: the Stellar and Planetary Nebulae Populations
We compare abundances patterns in the Bulge for elements observed in stars and in planetary nebulae. Some α elements, like Mg and Ti, are overabundant in respect to Fe, and others are not, like He, O, Si, S, Ar, Ca. The first ones favor a quick evolution of the Galactic Bulge, and the seconds a much slower one.
متن کاملStellar Evolution from AGB to Planetary Nebulae
Planetary nebulae are formed by an interacting winds process where the remnant of the AGB wind is compressed and accelerated by a later-developed fast wind from the central star. One-dimensional dynamical models have successfully explained the multi-shell (bubble, shell, crown, haloes) structures and the kinematics of planetary nebulae. However, the origin of the diverse asymmetric morphology o...
متن کاملPlanetary nebulae as tracers of galaxy stellar populations
We address the general problem of the luminosity-specific planetary nebula (PN) number, better known as the “α” ratio, given by α = NPN/Lgal, and its relationship with age and metallicity of the parent stellar population. Our analysis relies on population synthesis models, that account for simple stellar populations (SSPs), and more elaborated galaxy models covering the full star-formation rang...
